(NOTE Correction indicating the deputy was not behind motorcyclists but was parked on the right shoulder east of the crash scene)
Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers with the assistance of Multnomah County Sheriff's Office are investigating a fatal motorcycle-involved traffic crash on Interstate 84 about four miles east of Troutdale. The crash resulted in the death of a 63-year old male and serious injuries to a 50-year old male. Names will be released later tonight. The left eastbound lane is open for traffic and both lanes may be open in about two hours.
On June 10, 2011 at approximately 12:05 p.m. a group of motorcyclists were traveling together eastbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 21 when a crash occurred involving two motorcycles. Preliminary investigation indicates a group of ten motorcycles with 12 occupants were riding together eastbound enroute to the Baker City area. The victim was operating a white Harley Davidson motorcycle in the middle of the group and lost control, crashing onto the pavement where he was run over by the second motorcyclist. The crash was witnessed by a Multnomah County deputy who was parked on the right shoulder east of the scene. The deputy and citizens who stopped to help provided initial emergency medical care until medics arrived.
The victim was wearing a protective helmet.
The seriously injured motorcycle operator was transported by AMR ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.
Traffic was blocked eastbound until about 1:00 p.m. when the left lane was re-opened. The motorcycle group has remained on scene helping investigators.
A non-injury crash occurred in the westbound lanes next to the traffic scene. The westbound lanes remained open and that crash is being investigated by Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.
OSP troopers from the Portland Area Command office are leading the investigation.
Multnomah County Fire District 14, Gresham Fire Department, Troutdale and Fairview Police Departments, and ODOT assisted at the scene. Traffic updates at www.tripcheck.com .
Names will be released later tonight to allow family to complete additional next of kin notifications.
