Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers, with the assistance of Astoria Police Department, are investigating a serious injury traffic crash involving a small pickup and a loaded log truck on Highway 105 (also known as Business Highway 101) near the intersection with Highway 202 in Astoria. The crash resulted in serious injuries to a former Astoria City Councilman and critical injuries to his wife. OSP is seeking additional witnesses and information to help identify the driver and vehicle that may have been a factor in this crash investigation.
According to OSP Lieutenant Duane Stanton, on June 14, 2011 at approximately 3:30 p.m. OSP was requested to respond to investigate the crash at the request of Astoria Police Department. Preliminary investigation indicates at about 3:13 p.m. a small Toyota pickup driven by DONALD B. MORDEN, age 83, from Astoria, was northbound on Highway 105 approaching a left curve where 5th Street intersects. According to a witness, a dark gray newer model Toyota Corolla was stopped at a stop sign southbound on 5th Street and pulled into the path of the pickup causing the pickup to come to a near stop. As the Toyota Corolla cleared the intersection the pickup was struck in the rear by a loaded log truck driven by KENNETH NESS, age 54, from Astoria. The impact pushed the pickup into a median area.
The unidentified Toyota Corolla was last seen southbound on Highway 105.
DONALD MORDEN and his wife, ANNA M. MORDEN, age 83, were extricated by Astoria Fire Department personnel and transported by ambulance to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria. ANNA MORDEN was transferred by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in critical condition. DONALD MORDEN was transferred by ground ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with serious injuries. Safety restraint use is pending confirmation.
NESS was not injured. He was not using safety restraints.
Any witnesses or others with information to identify the driver of the Toyota Corolla is asked to call OSP Northern Command Center dispatch at 800-452-7888. Lead investigator is Trooper Andrew Morgan.
ODOT, Astoria Police Department, Astoria Fire Department and Lewis & Clark Fire Department assisted at the scene.
