Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Wednesday afternoon's multiple vehicle traffic crash that has resulted in the death of an adult male and injuries to at least four other people on Highway 82 near the Union / Wallowa county line. OSP troopers are still gathering all names and information for additional details to be released Thursday.

Preliminary information according to OSP Sergeant Kyle Hove indicates on June 8, 2011 at approximately 2:00 p.m. a truck pulling a box trailer loaded with livestock was traveling eastbound downhill on Highway 82 near milepost 31 within a highway work zone. Traffic was narrowed down to one lane with flaggers controlling traffic from both directions into one lane.

As the truck and trailer approached the narrowed traffic lanes the driver was unable to stop and sideswiped three westbound vehicles. The truck and trailer then overturned on top of a fourth vehicle.

The truck's driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. Eight cows and 9 calves were also reported killed. Several other cattle were injured, some seriously.

Information including which vehicles the other injured persons were in is being gathered for release Thursday.

Highway 82 has been closed since the crash occurred and emergency responders are working quickly to re-open the road.

OSP troopers from the La Grande Area Command office are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash.

OSP is being assisted by Union County Sheriff's Office, Wallowa County Sheriff's Office, Elgin Police Department, Elgin Rural Fire Department and ODOT.
