On Monday, June 27, 2011 at 5:35 p.m. Clackamas County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a disturbance in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, located at 10000 SE 82nd Ave. Deputies soon discovered that a 59-year-old male adult had been assaulted in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, in an unprovoked attack by a 31-year-old man wielding a hammer.
The victim, Harry Anderson, 59, of Milwaukie, reported to Sheriff's Deputies he had completed his shopping in Wal-Mart, exited the store and was walking to automobile in the lot. As he approached his vehicle, Anderson states he was hit on the back of his head. Immediately following this strike to the rear of his head, the suspect - armed with a hammer - came around to the front of Anderson and hit him in the forehead. The suspect is then described to have raised him arm with the weapon, and Anderson was able to block the next intended strike to his head. This blocking motion enabled Anderson to deflect the intended strike and push the suspect - who was smiling - away from him.
A conscientious citizen, John Curran, 36, of Happy Valley, witnessed the attack and moved into position to render aid to the victim and intervene in the assault. This intervention is believed to have caused the suspect armed with a hammer to flee the scene on foot.
The suspect was observed by witnesses and followed a short distance, enabling the Deputies arriving on scene to chase the suspect on foot for a short distance, and successfully apprehend the suspect near the Sears Outlet Store parking lot. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
The suspect is identified as Jonathan Edward Jones, 31; who provided Deputies with a residential address on NE 202nd Avenue, in Portland. Jonathan Jones was transported to the Clackamas County Jail and lodged with the following charges identified as:
1. Attempted Murder
2. Attempted Assault in the first-degree
3. Menacing
4. Disorderly Conduct (Existing Multnomah County warrant)
The victim, Harry Anderson, was transported from the scene with head injuries to Providence Milwaukie Hospital. Fortunately, Anderson was later released from the hospital and is available to interview with interested media.
Harry Anderson will be available to all interested media today, June 28, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. at the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Brooks Building, 9101 SE Sunnybrook, Clackamas, 97015. (Fourth floor in the Pictorial Center)
Jonathan Jones is scheduled to appear for arraignment on this matter today, June 28, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. in Clackamas County Circuit Court.
