Regional Sheriff's Offices
Clackamas County, Multnomah County, Washington County and Yamhill County
Enhanced traffic-enforcement effort targets school zones, gets results
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ***(Photos Attached)***
As part of our continuing effort to save lives and promote safety, the regional Sheriff's Offices of Clackamas, Multnomah, Washington and Yamhill counties have been conducting enhanced school-zone enforcement efforts these first two weeks of the new school year -- increasing patrols in school zones and bus routes looking for speeding vehicles and inattentive drivers during school hours.
During the first two weeks of the new school year, deputies issued 96 citations to motorists in school zones -- on charges that included speeding, driving while suspended/revoked, driving without privileges, failure to wear a safety belt, failing to yield to pedestrians, no insurance, expired vehicle license and talking on a cell phone.
The regional Sheriffs have continued this partnership since 2009, when they agreed the use of combined resources could improve overall public safety. The Sheriffs of these counties recognize the value of combining resources periodically with neighboring counties to help ensure community safety.
The first week of school is always a hectic time for parents, kids, crossing guards, and school bus drivers as everyone tries to get back into the school routine. Combined with the normal traffic flow in school zones and the surround area this can create a dangerous situation for everyone.
Any school zone marked with an appropriate sign has its speed reduced to 20 MPH after the school year begins -- and will be subject to doubled traffic citation fines, regardless of the regular posted speed limit in the area.
Deputies from the regional sheriff's offices also watched for drivers violating traffic laws pertaining to school busses. As a reminder, when the red lights on a school bus are flashing, all traffic traveling in both directions must come to a stop, unless the roadway is physically divided.
The elected office of the Sheriff is unique. By statute it is responsible for several areas of public safety that are critical, including running a jail, search and rescue, waterway protection, and civil services. Each sheriff's office also has resources necessary to meet other law enforcement needs that benefit the citizens of each county.
Please visit the web page of the Oregon State Sheriff's Association or any of the members of the coalition for more information on the office of the Sheriff. [END]
