SEARCH FOR MISSING FISHERMAN ON WILLAMETTE RIVER CONTINUING
Posted: April 24th, 2010 5:29 PM
On 04-24-10 at 1000 hours Milwaukie Police was dispatched to the Jefferson Street Boat Ramp on the Willamette River. Family members reported 57-year-old Dale Garland of Portland left home at 0430 this morning to go fishing on the Willamette River. Mr. Garland's vehicle and boat were parked at the Milwaukie boat ramp. Through the investigation, it was determined Mr. Garland and his boat were seen at the Lake Oswego boat dock at 0500 hours.
Another fisherman out on the river, a friend of Mr. Garland, recognized Garland's boat. It was tied to a boat dock on the Lake Oswego side of the river. Mr. Garland's property, fishing gear, and pet dog were in the boat, but Mr. Garland was not in the boat. The friend reported seeing the docked boat at 0530 hours. The fisherman returned an hour later and saw Mr. Garland's boat, dog and property were still at the dock, but Mr. Garland still wasn't seen near the boat, or the dock.
The friend was concerned and contacted family. The family notified police at 1000 hours. Clackamas County Search and Rescue, CCSO Marine Patrol and Dive Team were activated and arrived on-scene.
Searches proceeded, with dive team checking underwater, marine patrol checking the river with boats, and the SAR Team checking the riverbanks, forested area, and nearby neighborhoods, yards, and outbuildings on the Lake Oswego side of the river.
At this time Mr. Garland is still listed as a missing person. He is described at 5'10" tall, 210 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. He has a full, bushy beard. Mr. Garland has been fishing each day for the last six days along the Willamette River.
At 5:30 p.m. the search for Mr. Garland was suspended (this was decided for the safety of the search teams). The search will resume early tomorrow morning.
The investigation is continuing. There is nothing at this time to indicate any foul play.
