FREE EVENT EDUCATES OREGONIANS ABOUT HOLOCAUST TRACING SERVICES
Posted: April 23rd, 2010 4:05 PM
Last spring, Portland's Sarah Krakauer began her search for information about a long-lost relative, thought to have likely perished in the Holocaust. With the help of the American Red Cross - Oregon Trail Chapter, Krakauer was able to learn the fate of her grandfather's cousin, Mietek Weinberg. To her delight, Weinberg had survived the Holocaust, living a life beyond the forced-labor camps.
To educate Oregonians about the free Holocaust tracing services offered by the Red Cross, the Oregon Trail Chapter will host an educational event on Thursday, April 29 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Oregon Jewish Museum, 1953 NW Kearney. The event is free and open to the public.
Red Cross volunteers and staff will talk about efforts to trace and reunite family members separated due to natural disasters and armed conflicts. In addition, guest speaker Sarah Krakauer will share her personal experiences with the tracing process. The evening will conclude with a question and answer session.

About Guest Speaker Sarah Krakauer
Sarah Krakauer filed a Holocaust tracing request with the Oregon Trail Chapter after her own internet research met with unsatisfactory results. Her request was forwarded to the American Red Cross' Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Center in Maryland, where researchers sifted through databases in hopes of finding a mention of Weinberg in a Nazi record book or on a death certificate. Her concerns were eased when the Red Cross found Weinberg's name in a list of survivors from Lodz, Poland.
About the Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Information Center

During the last decade, the American Red Cross has assisted with thousands of inquiries from individuals seeking information about loved ones missing since the Holocaust and World War II.
