CHILDREN'S ART DEDICATION AT THE BEAVERTON CITY LIBRARY
Posted: April 23rd, 2010 3:55 PM

The community is invited to join Mayor Denny Doyle to celebrate the newest addition to the Beaverton City Library's art collection on Monday, April 26. The new portal archway, frieze, and desk panels in Children's Room at the library were created by Washington artist and illustrator Bryn Barnard. The artwork depicts animals taking off and flying through the sky on books and other information resources such as computers and CDs. The dedication will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Children's Room of the Library (12375 SW 5th St.) and will continue in Meeting Room B where light refreshments will be served.

"The new children's artwork is a whimsical welcome for kids entering the Children's Room from other areas of the Beaverton City Library," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "Art can help create an environment that nurtures exploration and learning for the thousands of children that come through the library doors each year."

The project is a partnership between the Beaverton City Library and the Beaverton Arts Commission. Nearly 200 artists throughout the nation responded to the call for art that was issued by the Arts Commission in November 2009. The proposal was selected by the Art Commission's Library Art Committee comprised of library staff, Library Board, Arts Commission board members, and local Beaverton artists.

The selection committee was charged with selecting a work of high artistic quality with the following criteria:
• Characteristics of the Beaverton City Library, particularly its architecture.
• Appropriate size and durability (the surface should be cleanable and vandalism resistant.
• Suitable for a high-traffic public facility (should not pose any safety concerns i.e. no protruding point surfaces)
• The artwork should be attractive and inviting to children.
