Mustard Press makes renewable impression with Blue Sky
kyMedford commercial printer becomes sustainability leader
MEDFORD, Ore. – Mustard Press, Inc. is at the forefront of the shift to using more sustainable printing methods.
One of the many ways Mustard Press works toward its ambitious environmental goals is through participation in Pacific Power's Blue Sky program. The program enables customers to purchase and help bring more renewable energy into the region.
"In printing, there are many ways to offset your environmental impact," said Kathy Mustard, co-owner with husband Tom. "The choices made when selecting paper, coatings, ink and chemicals all are opportunities for printers to positively affect the environment. Another important element is the power we use to run the presses."
Mustard Press has committed to buying more than 11 percent of its electricity through Blue Sky, Pacific Power's award-winning renewable energy program. By purchasing 10 blocks per month, the Mustard Press is delivering a tangible benefit to the environment.
Overall, during the course of a year, Mustard Press' renewable energy purchases offset more than 14,000 pounds of carbon emissions, which is equivalent to not driving almost 15,000 miles.
Besides Blue Sky, Mustard Press also has many sustainable business practices in place such as replacing all the operation's lights with low-energy bulbs and recycling all paper, ink and aluminum plates.
"We have also become certified by the Forest Stewardship Council," Mustard said. "For our clients, this means we can print and use the FSC logo and document chain of custody of our paper products."
Pacific Power customers can add to the commitment demonstrated by Mustard Press by greening their own homes and businesses. Buying just one, 100-kilowatt hour block of Blue Sky power costs only $1.95 per month. Customers can buy as many blocks as they wish. Blue Sky Usage allows customers to offset emissions from 100 percent of their electricity use with renewable resources for less than a penny more per kilowatt-hour. With Blue Sky Habitat, customers buy renewable energy at the same rate as Blue Sky Usage, plus donate to The Nature Conservancy of Oregon to preserve native fish habitat. Large business customers can buy renewable power in bulk at a discount through Blue Sky QS.
Enrollment in Blue Sky is optional and customers can increase their participation or withdraw at any time. Customers can sign up for Blue Sky renewable power by calling Pacific Power at 800-769-3717 or by visiting www.pacificpower.net/bluesky.

About Blue Sky
Strong customer support has enabled the Blue Sky program to be instrumental in the creation of more federally recognized Green Power Communities than any other program in the nation. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has ranked Blue Sky fifth or better in the nation for the sixth consecutive year in the number of customers buying renewable power and for renewable power sales volume. Blue Sky was named national 2007 Green Power Program of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. The program is Green-e Energy Certified, which means the renewable energy supported meets the rigorous national environmental and consumer-protection standards established by the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions. For more information on Green-e Energy, visit www.green-e.org/energy. More than 39,000 customers in the Northwest are part of Blue Sky.
