- Repainting and lead mitigation will close gym for at least three weeks -

(Portland, OR) – Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) staff will be temporarily closing the gym at St. Johns Community Center (8427 N. Central Street) on March 15 for improvements, including repainting and lead paint mitigation. The project is expected to take a minimum of three weeks to complete, with the gym reopening in early April.

While the rest of the community center building has been previously remodeled, the gym requires special consideration due to the presence of lead paint. PP&R staff are conferring with Multnomah County Health and State of Oregon OSHA consultants and working with a lead mitigation expert for approval of all precautionary measures during the closure.

During the project, the gym will be sealed off from the rest of the building, which will still be open for normal hours of operation. The ventilation system in the gym will also be sealed off to ensure no dust escapes the contained area. Clearance testing by an appropriately certified third party will occur prior to re-opening the gym for public use.

"Safety is paramount during this process," notes Bob Downing, PP&R's Central Services Manager. "We want to ensure a healthy environment for everyone who uses the center, including while the project is underway."
