68-YEAR OLD MOTORIST STRIKES 3 CHILDREN IN CROSSWALK - MINOR INJURIES ONLY
Posted: March 11th, 2010 11:39 AM

At about 7:48 am this morning, a 68-yr old motorist was stopped at a stop sign, westbound on McGillivray at 136th Avenue. Another motorist was turning in front of the driver; south on 136th Avenue to East on McGillivray. The turning vehicle blocked the view of the 68-yr old motorist, and he did not see three children in the crosswalk on the other side of the intersection.

When the uninvolved motorist was no longer in the intersection, the elderly driver drove west and struck the children as they were crossing north to south in the crosswalk. The children, ages 10-11, were not seriously injured. Two were riding bicycles without helmets and the third was walking with them. All three were transported to SW Washington Medical Center as a precaution.

Vancouver police investigated the collision and determined the 68-yr old driver, Leonard Leger, failed to yield to pedestrians/bicycles in a crosswalk. The motorist was not hurt, but was visibly shaken. Alcohol did not play a part in the collision. Although the motorist was found to be at fault, the investigating officer did not issue a citation. A collision report was completed and parents were provided with the motorist's insurance information.
