SHERIFF'S OFFICE SEEKS CITIZEN ACADEMY APPLICANTS

Have you ever wanted to learn a bit more about law enforcement?
The Washington County Sheriff's Office's Citizen Academy is getting underway and looking for volunteers. The Citizen Academy is part of the Sheriff's Office effort to promote and preserve a safe community for all citizens.
The 55-hour training program combines classroom and hands-on instruction to members of the community. It also gives community members an opportunity to observe the inner workings of the Sheriff's Office.
Participants will learn about a variety of activities deputies are engaged in, from learning about police equipment, participating in jail activities, touring criminal justice facilities and participating in role-playing scenarios.
Topics include crime scene investigations, patrol, the county jail, K-9 teams, tactical operations, and use of firearms, narcotics enforcement and more.
The next Citizen Academy begins Tuesday, September 2, 2014, and ends on November 4, 2014. Each academy is limited to 40 students. The academy is free of charge.
Classes are held every Tuesday from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m., with three weekend classes. Classes are typically held in the training rooms at the Sheriff's Office at 215 S.W. Adams Avenue in Hillsboro. Participants must be at least 18 years old and live in Washington County.
