PF&R MOVES FROM RESCUE TO RECOVERY MODE IN THE SEARCH FOR 18YR OLD MALE SWIMMER NEAR SELLWOOD PARK

At 5:30pm PF&R responded to a water rescue call near Sellwood Park. An 18yr old male was having difficulty swimming to shore; it was reported that he was not a strong swimmer and that he was not wearing a life jacket. Two rescue crafts (jet ski's w/ rescue swimmers)and one rescue boat were sent to the scene in hopes of rescuing the young m an but he had submerged below water before their arrival. It was originally reported that two of the swimmers had jumped from the Sellwood Bridge prior to the incident but it was later realized that the swimmers entered the water from the east bank and were swimming near a construction barge. The emergency scene has currently transitioned to a recovery operation and has been turned over to Multnomah County Sheriff Department -they have dispatched recovery divers to the scene.
