At 11pm last night, Saturday August 2nd, 2014, firefighters were called to the 2500 block of SW Golf Course Road. This is just south of the City of Cornelius. Firefighters arrived minutes l ater to find the side of a vacant house on fire, after approximately 15 minutes crews were able to extinguish the flames and spent another hour and a half extinguishing hot spots.
Earlier in the evening at 7:40pm, firefighters were called to the same address for a grass fire. This occurred approximately 200 yards prior to the house next to a field. The grass fire was started by power lines that were knocked down by a large oak tree limb. That fire grew to about 1/4 of an acre. While a PGE Lineman was waiting for additional crews to arrive to replace the damaged power lines, he noticed the fire from the main road and called it in.
The fire caused significant damage to the floor joists and exterior wall as well as burned rooms near the exterior wall. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but appears to be accidental. A damage estimate is not available at this time. One firefighter experienced signs of heat exhaustion and was evaluated on scene by Paramedics, but was not transported to the hospital.
Cornelius Fire Department was assisted on scene by Forest Grove Fire & Rescue and Gaston Fire District.
