CITY OF CANBY RESIDENT KILLED BY AMTRAK TRAIN

On Tuesday February 7, 2012, at approximately 6:57 P.M., members of the City of Canby Police and Canby Fire Department were dispatched to the area of N. Elm Street and N.W. 1st Avenue. It was reported that a pedestrian was hit by a train near that location.
Arriving Canby Police Officers found a southbound Amtrak train (Union Pacific Railroad) stopped west of the intersection. After contacting and speaking with the train Engineer, officers were told a male subject was on the railroad tracks when he was hit by the train. After a brief search of the area, a deceased male subject was located. The man has been identified as 46 year old ROBERT LAWRENCE BAKER, a resident of Canby. The immediate family members of Mr. Baker have been notified of the incident.
The Clackamas County Medical Examiner responded to the scene and took custody of Mr. Baker's body. A post mortem examination and blood toxicology report will be conducted by the Clackamas County Medical Examiner. According to the Medical Examiner's office, these results will not be available until a later time.
At this time, Detective Mead with the Canby Police Department is the lead investigator and based upon a preliminary investigation, it is believed Mr. Baker was walking across the railroad tracks when he was hit by the lead locomotive. The impact threw Mr. Baker approximately fifty feet off the railroad tracks and into a nearby field. From all indications, the visual, audible, and arm guard signals located at N. Elm Street and N.W. 1st Avenue were operating and no malfunctions are believed to have occurred at the time of this incident. The area where Mr. Baker was hit is not marked as a designated crossing for vehicles or pedestrians.
Representatives with the Union Pacific Railroad are cooperating with this investigation.
The public is invited to attend a Celebration of Life Service in memory of Mr. Baker located at the Bethany Evangelical Free Church on Monday, February 13, 2012, at 11:00 A.M. Bethany Evangelical Free Church is located at 450 S. Ivy Street, Canby, Oregon.
