The following details are being released Wednesday morning, January 26, updating developments of the ongoing search for suspect DAVID ANTHONY DURHAM, age 43, related to Sunday night's shooting of Lincoln City Police Officer Steven B. Dodds:
* As of Wednesday morning, Officer Dodds condition continues to improve but he is still listed in critical condition at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland. His family and friends are encouraged by his fighting spirit and responsiveness and awareness during their visits.
* DURHAM, from northwest Portland, is described as a white male, 6'3", 160 – 185 pounds, with long brown hair and blue eyes. NEW INFORMATION: At the time of the shooting, DURHAM was wearing full green camouflage clothing including a long sleeve shirt, pants, and tan or dark colored boots. He was wearing a dark colored beret cap. The clothing is similar that worn in a new photograph released Tuesday that was taken last year. DURHAM is reported to still have long hair as seen in the 2007 DMV photograph. (Photograph provided)
* DURHAM is considered armed and dangerous. He is still believed to be accompanied by his dog named "Huckleberry", a salt-and-pepper colored Blue Healer Australian Cattle dog weighing about 40 pounds. (Photo provided)
* During the last 48 hours:
- OSP SWAT team members have checked over 250 area residences conducting exterior and interior searches.
- Law enforcement officers working around the clock in the Waldport area have responded to nearly 200 reports of suspicious circumstances, persons and incidents in the Waldport and surrounding area.
- In follow up on one of the reports that came into the command center Tuesday night, an OSP detective looked into a report of an overdue motorist who was supposed to be traveling from Newport to Roseburg. The detective followed up on the report to ensure it was not connected to this investigation. After obtaining the name of the 44-year old woman's cell phone company, the detective determined her cell phone had been shut off after the last confirmed location was in the Albany area. Albany police was contacted and they subsequently found the woman's car at a hotel in Albany. Four hours after the initial report was received, she was located in a hotel room with injuries from an apparent suicide attempt. She was taken to a hospital for treatment.
* The flyers handed out Tuesday afternoon by the Waldport Citizens Volunteer Patrol regarding the search for DURHAM are now posted at many area businesses.
* The help from the volunteer citizens' patrol as well as several area businesses and people bringing food and words of encouragement are greatly appreciated.
* Over 30 law enforcement agencies from city, county, state and federal agencies have been helping with the investigation during the last two days. OSP SWAT team members, troopers, deputies and officers continue searching today for DURHAM in the Waldport area. During the day, officers will continue to respond to tips of suspicious circumstances and possible leads in the search for DURHAM.
* A US Coast Guard helicopter is assisting during daily area flights being observant for any signs of the suspect along the beach.
* The area previously restricted during the search off Highway 101 in the north Waldport area is open but vehicles entering and leaving will continue to be subject to search. Area residents are asked to continue reporting any suspicious activity or concerns to police, including reports of barking dogs or unknown or suspicious persons. Area residents and travelers are reminded to not pick up any hitchhikers or any strangers asking for a ride.
* Area residents should continue to check for any missing boats or vehicles. If missing, please contact the non-emergency line listed below.
* Waldport area residents should expect to continue to see a heavy police presence in their community. The search is expected to continue.
* America's Most Wanted (AMW) placed the investigation as their lead story Tuesday afternoon on their website www.amw.com . Tips that come into AMW will be forwarded to our case investigators.
* Anyone who sees someone matching the description of DURHAM should immediately call Lincoln County 9-1-1. Anyone with non-emergent information related to this investigation or about DURHAM should call their non-emergency line at (541) 265-4231.
