UPDATE: OSP CITES BOAT OPERATOR RELATED TO INCIDENT THAT INJURED WOMAN AT DIAMOND LAKE BOAT DOCK
Posted: June 13th, 2010 12:10 PM

A Redmond-area man was cited Saturday night following a several hour search and investigation related to an incident at Diamond Lake Saturday afternoon when a jet sled went up onto a boat dock and struck a 62-year old Salem woman knocking her into the water. The suspect, later identified as STEVEN MATTHEW WOLFE, age 30, was located at the lake's resort and cited to appear for Recklessly Endangering Another Person. A boat matching the description of the one believed to be involved was found tied up on a beach near the resort.

On June 12, 2010, boat and shore activity at Diamond Lake was described as very busy while many people were there for weekend activities including free fishing day. The victim was walking on the dock with her husband and adult age son at the main marina when a jet sled containing two adults and one child reportedly jumped up onto the dock and hit the woman, knocking her into the water.

The woman identified as COLLEEN SAVAGE, age 62, from Salem, was retrieved from the lake. She received head and other non-life threatening injuries.

Chemult EMS and OSP Senior Trooper Joe Smith were dispatched to the lake. Highway 138E was temporarily shut down to allow an Air Life helicopter to land and transport SAVAGE to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for treatment.

Prior to OSP arrival, witnesses said the jet sled's adult male operator, an adult female thought to possibly be his wife, and a small child remained at the scene and talked to some of the people who had gathered at the dock. They left before they could be identified.

The boat was tied to the dock until an unknown adult male untied it and drove it away in the lake to an unknown area. The jet sled was described as approximately 20 feet in length, blue or blue & silver in color with a windshield and no top.

During the day, Senior Trooper Smith, an OSP Fish & Wildlife Division trooper on boat patrol, Douglas County Sheriff's Office and resort employees were trying to find the involved jet sled and other people associated with this incident.

While checking around the lake, Senior Trooper Smith found a boat matching the description of the one involved in the incident abandoned and tied up to a beach near the resort. Two retired OSP troopers vacationing at the lake told Smith they saw a man matching the description of the suspect near the boat.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. Senior Trooper Smith located WOLFE at a resort room. He was with his girlfriend who didn't match the woman's description in the boat at the time of the incident. WOLFE was subsequently cited to appear in Douglas County Circuit Court for Recklessly Endangering Another Person.

The others believed to be present or the man who drove the boat away from the dock was not identified.

No other information or photographs available at this time.
