Posted: June 7th, 2010 3:26 PM
This update is being sent out at the request of the Wheeler County Sheriff.
Update-The John Day River is now back to 13,000 cfs. We will be opening the river to rafters as of June 8th 2010 at 6am.
The previous news release is below:
Due to dangerously high water and public safety concern, all public and B.L.M. boat launches on the John Day River between Kimberly and the Lower Burnt Ranch are closed until further notice. Those areas have been posted with warning signs and ribbon.
The portion of the John Day River that runs through Wheeler County is above flood stage and the volume of water is expected to maintain or increase over the next several days.
Persons that intentionally decide to ignore or violate the posted warnings will be subject to arrest and prosecution.
The Wheeler County Sheriff's Office in conjunction with B.L.M. law enforcement and parks department will continue to monitor the river volume and make a determination as to when the river can be safely navigated again.
By the authority of the Wheeler County Sheriff's Office and the Prineville B.L.M. Office
