Legacy trees grow thirsty—'gators' to the rescue
After donating 200 trees to community in April, Pacific Power adds special watering devices
ASTORIA, Ore. – Trees need water to thrive—even in a town known to have its share of sprinkles.
As part of its legacy gift to Astoria, Pacific Power joined April 22 with the community, the Astoria Bicentennial Committee and city leaders to plant power line-friendly trees throughout town. Today, Pacific Power announced at an Astoria City Council meeting that it is donating 150 "gator" tanks to water the trees that aren't close to other watering options. Once the tanks are filled, water slowly seeps out at the tree base, lasting two to three weeks.
"Keeping these new trees healthy and growing is part of our continuing contribution to the community," said Sheila Holden, Pacific Power's regional community manager. "Our partnership with a nonprofit group called Friends of Trees in Portland allowed us to get a good price for these gators and, at the same time, help another group in its efforts to support the proper placement and care for trees."
Arline LaMear, city commissioner and city tree committee chair added, "We are delighted that Pacific Power has added to its gift of trees with gators that will help us ensure that all the trees get ample water during Astoria's summer 'drought.'"
