(Portland, OR) – Students from several nearby schools will join former Parks Commissioner Dan Saltzman, Portland Parks & Recreation Director Zari Santner, and the Northwest District Association as the community celebrates recent improvements made to the play area at Couch Park.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Opus Foundation, as well as support from the Portland Parks Foundation and the Northwest District Association, the play area at Couch Park has several new improvements, addressing safety and ADA issues.

This small celebration to recognize the improvements and recognize the donors' generous support is open to everyone.

What: Celebration of play area improvements

When: 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 10, 2010

Where: Couch Park playground, at NW 19th Ave & Glisan Street

Background:
Couch Park's play area has seen several improvements in the past year. Improvements to the play area addressed some safety concerns, as well as provided several new features that increase overall accessibility for all users of the play areas. In response to interest expressed by the community and Metropolitan Learning Center (MLC) School, a new fence was erected around much of the play area. Additionally, a turf mound by the play area was replaced with new amenities to provide greater opportunities for play.

The Opus Foundation, a partner of Opus NW, the developer of Park 19 project adjacent to Couch Park, generously provided $50,000 towards the playground project. Additional funding for these improvements came from the voter-approved 2002 Parks Operating Levy.

Portland Parks Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization formed in 2001, to bring new resources and expertise to the long-term stewardship of Portland's parks and park programs.
