Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing to investigate Thursday afternoon's critical injury traffic crash involving a commercial truck and passenger car on Highway 30 west of Columbia City. The highway is still reportedly closed with a detour in place, and traffic updates may be available on ODOT's website www.tripcheck.com .
According to OSP Sergeant Andrew Merila, preliminary information indicates on June 17, 2010 at approximately 12:07 p.m. a 2007 Freightliner truck pulling two empty tanker trailers was driven by ROBERT R. BALDWIN, age 46, from Milwaukie, southbound on Highway 30 near milepost 35 when a northbound 1999 Pontiac Grand Am crossed the centerline and collided head-on with the truck.
The Pontiac's 44-year old female driver was critically injured and transported by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland. Her name and city of residence will be released after we learn if next of kin were notified.
BALDWIN was not injured. He was driving for Harris Transportation Company.
Both drivers were using safety restraints.
OSP troopers from the St. Helens office, with the help of an OSP collision reconstructionist from the Astoria office, are investigating. Columbia County Sheriff's Office, Rainier Police Department, Columbia River Fire & Rescue, and ODOT are assisting at the scene.
No photographs available at this time for release.
