Portland Fire & Rescue responded to an apartment fire at 8879 SE 9th Avenue at 10:37 am today. When crews arrived, they saw black smoke coming from the attic and roof of the three story apartment building. Crews made sure everyone was out of the building and began fighting the fire in the attic and walls of the upper floor. Due to the location of the apartment and the size of the building, extra crews were called to assist. The fire was under control at 11:20 am, however, crews are still there mopping up.
The fire cause was determined to be a short in the old electrical system inside the attic of the building which was built in 1904.
It is always important to have a licensed electrician conduct electrical improvements to your home. And if you have a home with the old "knob and tube" electrical system, it is advised that you have a licensed electrician inspect it.
No one was injured in this fire.
