Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a house fire at 5431 SE 89th Avenue at 6:14 am this morning and found an adult male suffering from non-life threatening burns. The resident was transported to the Oregon Burn Center by ambulance. There had been 2 families living in the residence at the time of the fire and had been awoken by a working smoke alarm. All the other residents were able to climb out a back bedroom window while the adult male pulled the burning chair and couch outside.

Crews determined the fire had already been mostly extinguished by a neighbor and was caused by a propane space heater. The heater was being used to heat the residence and was sitting inside the livingroom where it caught a chair and couch on fire.

Heating is the second leading cause of home fires (USFA). Portable space heaters are the top cause of fire deaths from home heating equipment.

- Never use the stove or oven to heat your home.

- Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including furniture, blankets, curtains, and paper products.

- Choose space heaters that turn off automatically if they tip over.

- Never use a space heater to dry clothing.

- Avoid kerosene and propane heaters. They can emit poisonous fumes and gases that can be extremely hazardous to your health. Some gases are colorless and ordorless which are referred to as the "silent killer".
