This evening at 6:28 pm, Portland Firefighters were called to a building on fire at 5814 SE 92nd. The two story building had businesses on the first floor and apartments on the second. Firefighters from Station 11 (located just a half block away) arrived and noted heavy smoke billowing from one side of the structure. The incident commander noted that winds were causing this fire to grow quickly and called for a second alarm.

Firefighters worked to ensure that all the occupants got out safely. Several residents escaped into the cold with only light clothing on (shorts and t-shirts). Firefighters located the fire burning in the joist spaces between floors and within the walls. The wind made this fire difficult to extinguish, but fire crews were able to knock down a majority of the fire within an hour.

PF&R firefighters will be on scene for some time ensuring that the fire is completely out. The displaced families will be temporarily sheltered in a TriMet bus for warmth and the Red Cross will be assisting with longer term shelter and any other needs. A fire investigator is on scene working to determine the fires cause and damage estimates are being calculated.

These residents did the right thing; they got out and stayed out when they noted the fire.
