Hillsboro firefighters handing out candy to children at the Downtown Hillsboro trick-or-treat event were called in to help stop flooding in a nearby county building early Saturday evening. The flooding occurred at about 4:30 pm at the Washington County Justice Services building at 150 N 1st Avenue and resulted from clogged drainage pipes outside. The water backed up nearly four feet deep in an emergency exit stairwell on the south side of the building and seepage resulted in one to two inches of water in the nearly 10-thousand square feet of basement offices.

Additional firefighters with portable pumps, squeegees and water vacuums responded and moved approximately 100 boxes of court documents from floors to table tops and chairs. The 20 firefighters used the squeegees to move water down hallways and through exit doors to operating drains. They spent nearly three hours working alongside of Washington County facility crews to help remove the bulk of the estimated three-thousand gallons of water. Commercial restoration crews will be called in to help return the offices to normal.

For additional information on county operations at that site, contact Philip Bransford, Washington County Public Information Officer, 503-332-0586.
