Gresh am, Ore. -- The City of Gresham Police Department is accepting applications for their Police Cadet program until Dec. 18 at 5:00 p.m., to fill upward of 10 positions.
Assigned to the department's operations division, cadet volunteers are trained by officers and take an active role in police ride-alongs, traffic patrols, and crime prevention. They work with sworn officers to provide security at community events and may assist with article searches at crime scenes. Additional opportunities include training with S.W.A.T and the department's K9 units.
Cadets also compete in the annual Oregon Law Enforcement Challenge; participating in firearms competitions and scenario-based events that include active shooter, building searches, precision driving, and crime scene investigation.
Applicants must be between 15 and 20 years of age, live in Gresham or the surrounding area, pass a criminal background check, have a good driving record (if applicable), and have a GPA of 2.5 or better if still attending high school. All persons selected as members of the cadet unit are required to attend and graduate a department-hosted academy.
Applications are available online at www.greshamoregon.gov/cadets and at the police department, 1333 NW Eastman Parkway, Gresham, OR, 97030. They must be emailed to the police department at Cadets@GreshamOregon.gov or dropped off at the department's front desk by Dec. 18. Interviews will be held in late December.
