News Release from Vancouver Police Dept.
Posted on FlashAlert: October 29th, 2015 3:41 PM
Vancouver, Wash. - On October 31, 2015, the Vancouver Police Department will be dedicating additional officers focused on DUI enforcement on Halloween in an effort to make the roadways safer from drivers that may be drunk, drugged or high.
On October 31, 2014, Vancouver Police responded to three separate DUI crashes between 8:20 pm-1:30am. Two of those crashes resulted in the deaths of three people and caused serious injuries to two others and the third crash involved an impaired driver that crashed through police barricades while traffic officers were at the scene of one of the previous investigations.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, almost half (48%) of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities on Halloween night involve an impaired driver and these numbers are even higher when the holiday falls on a weekend, like it does this year.
The Vancouver Police Department reminds drivers who plan to be out on Halloween:
* Designate a sober driver or call a cab if you have been drinking. Many cab companies
offer reduced rates on holidays.
* Don't text and drive.
* Hands free cell phone use only.
* Stay alert for trick or treaters and other pedestrians.
* Drive below the posted speed limit if there are pedestrians present.
