News Briefing on behalf of Douglas County Sheriff's Office:
Talking Points
10/1/15 - 4 pm briefing
Douglas County Sheriff Hanlin and Cpl. Hutson
We are still very early in this event and still trying to confirm a great deal of information. I want to say first and foremost our focus is on the victims and their families. Everything we do at this point is for them.
At this time we are reporting 10 deaths and 7 who were injured. All of the injured were initially transported to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg. Three of the most critically injured were flown to other hospitals. We know there are conflicting reports about the numbers, and I can tell you this is the best information we have at this time.
The FBI has established a toll free number for tips and families. That number is 1-800-225-5324 (800-CALL FBI) Choose option 7. Again it is 1-800-CALL FBI.
This event has been deemed a mass casualty event which brings specific protocols into play. That includes a specific process by which the state medical examiner's office will manage identification. Because of these protocols and the need to notify each family, we don't anticipate releasing names for 24 - 48 hours.
The law enforcement investigation into the shooter and his motivation is on-going. We are not ready at this time to make any comments on him.
Reunification continues at the Douglas County fairgrounds. Family of students should gather there. There are counselors at the fairgrounds providing assistance to those folks.
We continue to use the hashtag UCC shooting on our twitter account at DouglasCoSO
Further written updates will be posted to our website and to FlashAlertEugene.net
We do have a number of agencies that have responded with many different kinds of specialty resources. At a future briefing we can walk through some of what those are.
We anticipate having another briefing in the early evening. We will let you know when we have set that time through social media and FlashAlert
