Wanted Fugitive Shoots at Police during Chase
October 29, 2015 - A wanted violent fugitive shot multiple times at police as he attempted to evade capture. He received life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. There were no injuries to law enforcement during this incident.
On October 28, 2015, the U.S Marshals Office was tracking down Andrew Garrette Dehart, 36, who was wanted on a warrant for Attempted Murder, Kidnapping and First Degree Assault concerning an incident in Clark County, Washington. The Marshals were assisted by the Oregon State Police (OSP). They believed Mr. Dehart was armed and considered very dangerous.
The Marshals located Mr. Dehart at an acquaintance's residence in Seaside. As additional resources were traveling to the residence, Mr. Dehart drove away in a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup heading eastbound on Highway 26. The Marshals and OSP were at about Milepost 22 on Highway 26 when Mr. Dehart apparently saw them and increased his speed, continuing eastbound on Highway 26. At about Milepost 25 a few minutes after 10:00 p.m., Mr. Dehart began shooting from his truck at the pursuing law enforcement.
Mr. Dehart continued shooting at law enforcement as he continued eastbound on Highway 26 over the distance of about 17 miles. There was one patrol vehicle that was disabled from being struck by Mr. Dehart's bullets.
There were three law enforcement officers that were further east that received information that Mr. Dehart was fleeing and was shooting at other law enforcement. Those three officers were able to exit their vehicles on the east side of the tunnel at Milepost 41
on Highway 26. Those officers were able to fire at Mr. Dehart, which stopped the truck. Mr. Dehart was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.
The Washington County Major Crimes Team was activated to complete this investigation along with the Washington County Forensic Science Unit. The Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team is also assisting with this complex investigation.
There will be additional information released at a later time.
