In the aftermath of the home fire tragedy in northeast Portland today, which resulted in a fatality, the American Red Cross wants to alert residents of Oregon and southwest Washington that free smoke alarm and installation is available through the Red Cross Home Fire Preparedness Campaign.

Media reports noted that the home was equipped with working smoke alarms, which did not advert this tragedy; however many homes in areas all around the state do not have working smoke alarms. Next weekend, Nov. 7, as part of the Red Cross Home Fire Preparedness Campaign, local Red Cross volunteers will be in Gresham (ZIP code area 97030) to install FREE alarms in any home that needs them.

People do not need to live in Gresham to get a free smoke alarm; residents throughout Oregon and SW Washington may schedule an appointment with a trained Red Cross volunteer by calling (503) 528-5783, by emailing preparedness@redcross.org or by completing an online form at www.redcross.org/cascades. Residents will receive an appointment day/time window.

Over the past year the Red Cross has visited thousands of homes in Portland, Newport, Vancouver, Bend, Lebanon, Salem, Tillamook, Roseburg, Medford, Pendleton, Eugene/Springfield and Grants Pass to install almost 2,000 alarms. In addition, volunteers talk with residents to make home evacuation plans and provide other emergency preparedness information.
