Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a house fire at 837 NE 69th Avenue at 1:02 am where an adult male was later found deceased inside the home. When crews arrived, they saw fire coming from multiple floors and multiple windows. A resident who had gotten out of the home informed crews that an adult male was still inside. Crews immediated started putting water on the fire from the outside while other crews began searching the inside of the home. Unfortunately, an adult male was found decea sed.

"Our condolences to the family and friends of the person who lost their life this morning in this fire," stated Chief Erin Janssens. "The fire is a tragic example of how quickly anyone can be overcome by fire and the importance of working smoke alarms. Please make certain you always have an escape plan with at least two ways out, practice your plan with your family, and have working smoke alarms on every level, in every sleeping area, and replace them every 10 years."

Another adult male who lives in the home was transported to Providence Portland hospital with minor injuries. Residents were alerted of the fire by working smoke alarms.

Live power lines dropped onto the ground on both sides of the house which complicated the firefighting effort.

The fire cause is under investigation. Damage estimates have not yet been determined.
