Gresham, Ore. - Police officers and medical personnel responded to the intersection of N.E. 181st Ave. and E. Burnside St. at 8:09 this morning on the report of a pedestrian hit by a car. First responders rushed to the aid of a 46-year-old Portland woman who was struck by a 2008 Toyota Prius. The driver of the Prius, Jacob McLeod Walters, 27, also of Portland, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The victim, who was walking northbound on the east side of 181st Ave., was attempting to cross Burnside St. in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by Walters' eastbound car. Investigators say she landed in the street, approximately 35 feet east of the point of impact.

The victim reportedly suffered a broken left arm, compound fractures to her left leg, a broken pelvis, a spinal fracture and injures to her head. She was said to be unconscious when paramedics rushed her to an area hospital by ambulance. Police say the woman, a three-time kidney transplant recipient, appears to have suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The East County Vehicular Crimes Team is investigating the crash. Witness statements and the initial investigation indicates Walters was smoking marijuana seconds before the crash. Investigators have determined neither speed nor vehicle condition are contributing factors to this incident. The degree to which potential marijuana consumption was a factor is still under investigation.

Walters was later arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Assault in the Fourth Degree, Reckless Driving and Reckless Endangerment.
