WILSONVILLE, OR -- On Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, the City of Wilsonville Parks and Recreation Advisory Board awarded grants to support community programs with funding from the City's Community Opportunity Grant program. Three local organizations were awarded $7,000 in grants, including:
* Wilsonville High School -- For "Willie Fit," a non-competitive running and walking program: $3,000
* Wilsonville Chess Club -- For a local chess program for primary- and middle-school students: $2,000
* Wilsonville Harvest Market -- For seasonal events focused on local food and crafts: $2,000

Parks and Recreation Director Stan Sherer said, "All three of the programs the Board funded contribute to the overall health of our community by encouraging exercise, challenging our youngest minds by playing chess and promoting an active community-oriented lifestyle."

The Community Opportunity Grant program is funded by the City's general fund to assist local individuals and organizations that further educational or artistic opportunities; encourage and foster diversity; foster advances in education, art or community leadership; or involve youth or elderly population in community activities. A total of $25,000 is available each year, with two deadlines in October and March with $12,500 available during each grant cycle.
