Talking Points
Sheriff John Hanlin

10/2/15
2:00 pm briefing

My name is John Hanlin, and I am the sheriff in Douglas County.

This afternoon I am able to share with you information about the deceased victims. The information I am about to provide will be posted at www.flashalerteugene.net so that you may have the proper spellings and details.

The victims are:

* Lucero Alcaraz of Roseburg - 19 years old
* Quinn Glen Cooper of Roseburg - 18 years old
* Kim Saltmarsh Dietz of Roseburg - 59 years old
* Lucas Eibel of Roseburg - 18 years old
* Jason Dale Johnson of Winston - 33 years old
* Lawrence Levine of Glide - 67 years old. Mr. Levine is the teacher.
* Sarena Dawn Moore of Myrtle Creek - 44 years old
* Treven Taylor Anspach of Sutherlin - 20 years old
* Rebecka Ann Carnes of Myrtle Creek - 18 years old

We know that media are interested in speaking with families. We are working very closely them to arrange the release of these statements and photos. If they wish to do interviews, we will arrange those for them as well. At this time, all are asking for privacy. We would ask that you respect that request as they work through this most tragic of days.

This includes our emergency response families who, themselves, have suffered losses. First responders are not doing interviews and we ask that allow them to go about their work.

I do want to make a clarification regarding the number of injured. We have confirmed with the hospitals that there were indeed 9 victims who were transported and treated... not 7. To repeat, we have 9 injured. The death toll remains at 10, including the shooter.

Again, we are still requesting anyone with information, photos or videos to call 1-800-CALL FBI. Choose option 7.

Now, I would like to introduce Janet Holland - Executive Director of Community Health Alliance - to talk to us about the mental health resources available.

We are working to release the vehicles that are parked on campus. There have been inaccurate media reports saying that people should gather at the fairgrounds immediately. That is not true. Do not gather at the fairgrounds until at least 3 pm. The busses will be running from the fairgrounds to the campus until 6 pm. This is only for people who need to pick up their vehicles. We will make arrangements at a later time for those who need to pick up bags and backpacks inside the buildings.

Finally, the medical examiner has identified the shooter as Christopher Sean Harper-Mercer, age 26, of Winchester, Oregon. He was a student at Umpqua Community College and was enrolled in the class where the mass shooting took place.
