MEDFORD - The American Red Cross in Oregon and Southwest Washington responds to an average of two home fires every day. After these fires, residents had to face finding a place to stay, purchasing food and clothing, replacing lost possessions, notifying loved ones and navigating insurance.

On Saturday, Sept. 12, between the hours of 12:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., trained Red Cross volunteers will canvass neighborhoods in Medford to inquire if there is a working smoke alarm in the home, to install smoke alarms free of charge, review a fire safety and home hazard checklist, and provide information about creating a fire escape plan. Volunteers also will share other emergency-preparedness information with residents.

Medford residents may also schedule an appointment to have smoke alarms installed by calling (503) 528-5783 to make an appointment with a trained Red Cross volunteer.

"People have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home before it's too late to get out," says Melinda McGoldrick, preparedness and partnerships manager for the American Red Cross Cascades Region. "Working smoke alarms can double the chance of surviving a house fire. I encourage Medford residents to take advantage of this free community program."

McGoldrick also notes that the program is part of a national campaign launched by the American Red Cross last year and that in Oregon the campaign is a partnership with the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Volunteers are needed for this important outreach effort. Individuals, faith-based groups, local business and organizations are welcome to participate. All training will be provided on Sept. 12. For additional info or to register to volunteer, visit. www.redcross.org/cascadeshfpc.

The Red Cross advocates emergency preparedness: Get informed. Make a Plan. Build a Kit., and suggests taking a few moments to review your family's exit plan should there be a fire in your home. Know what to do before, during and after a home fire. This information, and more, is available at www.redcross.org or in a free Prepare! Resource Guide published by the American Red Cross Cascades Region. The guide can be downloaded at http://rdcrss.org/1zq8XW6.
