Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a fire alarm at Harrison Park School, 2225 SE 87th Avenue, just after 2:00 am this morning. When fire crews arrived, they found smoke in the hallway and upgraded the response to a full commercial fire. This brought 3 more engines, 2 trucks, 1 heavy rescue, an incident commander and a safety officer to the s chool to assist in extinguishing the fire.

Fire crews found the source of the smoke in a classroom where a fire was burning. Crews extinguished the fire and kept it from extending into the attic. The fire was under control around 2:30 am but the classroom was heavily damaged by the fire and smoke. Fire crews remained on scene for over an hour and a half extinguishing hot spots and assisting the fire investigator.

The fire cause has been determined to be an unknown electrical failure with damages estimated at $30,000.00.

No one was injured during this fire.

Portland Fire & Rescue recommends these steps to reduce the chance of having an electrical fire:

* Do not use electrical appliances, devices or wiring that have been modified or damaged.

* Only use grounded extension cords and appliances.

* Do not overload electrical outlets. Only use U.L. approved surge protected power strips
that are plugged directly into an electrical outlet.
