In the early morning hours (2:35 a.m.) of Friday, August 21, Lake Oswego Fire responded to a reported brush fire on the hillside adjacent to Waluga Park.
On arrival, fire crews found a large slow moving brush fire that was extending up a steep incline and threating to spread into a dense grove of trees and then into adjacent neighborhoods. Fire crews hand stretched several hundred feet of fire hose up the hillside in an attempt to stop the forward progress of the fire.

The fire was deemed to be contained at 3:17 a.m. but fire crews remained on scene all morning putting out "hot spots" and trying to determine what caused the fire.

Firefighters from all four of the City's fire stations were involved in extinguishing the fire, along with one Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crew. Fire crews from both the City of Portland and Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue were moved into our vacant Lake Oswego fire stations while our crews were working to extinguish the fire.

CodeRED - the City's emergency notification system - was used to notify the adjacent neighborhoods of the fire danger.

There were no injuries to firefighters or the public. While the fire is still under investigation, we cannot rule out the possibility that the fire was caused by the improper use and/or disposal of smoking materials or miss use of hand held open flame devices.

If you have any information pertaining to this fire, you are encouraged to call the Lake Oswego Fire Department at 503-635-0275.
