Gresham, Ore. - The City of Gresham Police Department is accepting applications for their Citizen Volunteers in Policing (CVIP) program until Sept. 11 at 5:00 p.m., to fill upward of 15 positions.

Supported by the police department, selected volunteer citizens become familiar with the philosophy, policies and procedures of the Gresham Police Department as they are trained to serve as additional eyes and ears in community policing.

CVIP members create a visible presence in the city's parks, trails, residential areas and commerce centers. Volunteers do not carry weapons, confront suspects, nor participate in altercations; they observe and report.

Applicants must be 21 years of age or older, live or own a business within Gresham's city limits, pass a DMV and criminal background check, and graduate from a nine-week Citizen Academy. In addition, those selected to become CVIP members will are required to be fingerprinted.

Applications are available online and may be mailed to the police department or dropped off at the department's front desk. A signed criminal background check form must be submitted with each application. Interviews will be held in September and October.
