August 8, 2015--Deputies arrested a DUII driver that crashed into a tree, injuring his two passengers.
On August 8, 2015, at 2:33 a.m., Sheriff's Deputies responded to NW Hornecker Road, north of the city of Cornelius, concerning a report of a vehicle that crashed into a tree. The driver reportedly remained at the crash scene.
Deputies arrived on scene and found a 1996 Hyundai Sonata that failed to negotiate a sharp right-hand curve after skidding over 170 feet. The Hyundai had severe damage with significant passenger compartment intrusion after striking a large Walnut tree. The two injured male passengers, ages 18 and 21, were transported to a hospital by a family member prior to the deputies' arrival.
Deputies contacted the driver, Christian Vazquez-Alfaro, 19, from Forest Grove. Sheriff's Deputies believe that alcohol was a contributing factor in this crash. Mr. Vazquez-Alfaro was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
It was learned that one of the passengers had serious injuries and the other had minor injuries. The severity of the passenger's injuries is yet to be determined. This case will be forwarded to the District Attorney for Grand Jury consideration.
The Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team assisted with the investigation.
Every year, the Washington County Sheriff's Office arrests about 1000 drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drivers are advised to plan ahead and have a designated driver arranged before they consume any substance that can cause impairment.
