BEAVERTON, Ore. - The City of Beaverton's Human Rights Advisory Commission (HRAC) will host speaker Brad Avakian on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 6:30 p.m. at the Beaverton City Library, 12375 SW Fifth St. Brad Avakian, commissioner of the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries, will discuss the Bureau's core mission which is to protect employment rights of workers through equal and nondiscriminatory treatment, encourage and enforce compliance with state wages, hour laws, and terms and conditions of employment. Commissioner Avakian will also discuss ensuring access to housing and public accommodations free from discrim ination.

"Equipping workers with the knowledge to understand what their rights are as an employee is fundamental to the protection of workers' rights," said Sheri Struk, HRAC vice-chair. "It's also equally important for businesses to understand the laws and to comply with them. This is a great opportunity for workers and business owners to learn more."

HRAC seeks to ensure that residents and visitors to Beaverton are treated with respect and given the opportunity to thrive in a safe and welcoming environment. The commission strives to educate individuals about the various populations that make up the city's diverse community. This is accomplished through many activities, including quarterly cultural conversations, during which residents or individuals who work in Beaverton can share their experiences based on their identification in certain racial, religious, or other groups. HRAC meets on the first Wednesday of each month.
