Thousands are expected to take part in the Big Float down the Clackamas River, Sunday, Aug. 2. The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office will have increased patrols on the water for the event.
"With the expected hot temperatures and the high number of people on the water, it's more important than ever to make sure that you're safe on our waterways, especially with the number of tragedies we've already had this summer," said Sheriff Craig Roberts. "I encourage everyone to wear a personal floatation device - most importantly, children. It's a simple decision that could save your life."
The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office will coordinate patrol efforts on the water with other law enforcement agencies along with enhanced patrols on the roadways. Clackamas County Parks is expecting parks to fill up as early as 10:00 a.m. on Sunday -- and once it is full, they will not allow further entry.
Make sure to park in designated spaces and utilize shuttle services to reduce the amount of vehicles in the lot. Vehicles parked outside the areas must adhere to traffic signs and not be parked as a hazard. Drivers can expect to see an increase in pedestrian traffic.
Important water safety tips to remember include:
- Never swim alone
- Avoid drinking alcohol during water activities, including swimming, diving and boating. Do not drink while supervising children. The risk is high and the consequences can be lethal.
- Don't dive into the water unless you're sure of the depth.
