April 17, 2015--The Washington County Sheriff's Office Canine Unit has been awarded ballistic vests for each of the canine's on the team due to a generous Washington County resident donation.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office Canine Unit has been awarded ballistic vests thanks to the Washington County Sheriff's Office Foundation, a nonprofit organization. The Sheriff's Office Foundation recently received a significant donation from a Washington County resident, Mrs. Donna Lane. Mrs. Lane wanted to ensure that the funds from her late husband's trust went specifically to serve the canines of the Washington County Sheriff's Office Canine Unit.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office Canine Unit requested to purchase ballistic bullet/stab resistant vests to each of the canines. This request was approved by the Washington County Sheriff's Office Foundation board.
Currently, the Sheriff's Canine Unit consists of three tracking teams, one narcotics team, and three canine teams dedicated to both tracking and narcotics detection (dual purpose canines).

The tracking dogs are trained to locate, follow, and alert on fresh human scent, which includes suspects who have fled from crime scenes or who have barricaded themselves in a building or house. The canines are also trained to protect the handler and to keep a violent or dangerous person from escaping. The new ballistic vests protect the canines while working alongside their handlers.

Sheriff's K9's Chase (Tracking), Oz (Tracking), Radar (Tracking), Stark (Dual), Tau (Narcotics), Taz (Dual) and Tux (Dual) each received a brand new bullet and stab resistant ballistic vests by Point Blank Body Armor. Each vest provides B-II level II protection and is one of the lightest, thinnest, and highest performing level II packages on the market today. The vests are proven effective for use during high risk deployments and are Department of Defense certified for Fragmentation Testing. Each vest is valued at $631.00 and is covered under a five year warranty.
