BEAVERTON, Ore. - The City of Beaverton's Emergency Management Program, in collaboration with Washington County and Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue partners, is offering an emergency and disaster preparedness training course in Spanish this May through Jun e. "Listos!," which means ready or prepared, is a culturally-adapted curriculum similar to the city's CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) program. The class is the first of its kind in Oregon.

Nationally, the Latino community is among the most vulnerable and severely impacted during and after a disaster. The primary goal of Listos! is to provide the foundation for participants from the Latino community who are primarily Spanish-speaking to be better prepared to help their families and friends during emergencies and disasters. The training covers topics ranging from utility shut-off and First Aid/CPR certification, to triage, search and rescue and disaster psychology. Upon completion, Listos! graduates will also have the opportunity to participate in additional training and events with Beaverton CERT.

"I am really proud of our partnership and excited that Beaverton is the first city in Oregon to offer culturally specific lifesaving programs like this," said Mayor Denny Doyle.

The National League of Cities recently recognized the city's initiatives to reach out to the diverse community in innovative ways, like partnering with Listos!, and awarded the city the City Cultural Diversity Award.

The Listos! program is free, and includes childcare and dinner for the participants.

Participants must attend all five sessions, which are three hours on Wednesday evenings from May 6 through June 3. The curriculum covers basic preparedness information, first aid and CPR/AED certification, disaster first aid, and search and rescue, in addition to other topics. Pre-registration is required and must be submitted by Friday, April 24. To register, go to http://listos.eventbrite.com.
