BEAVERTON, Ore. - This spring, leap into the performing and culinary arts at the Beaverton City Library. All season, the library's main branch will host performances, featuring classical musicians, actors, dancers, and opera singers. The library will also offer a variety o f workshops to help local singers, musicians, storytellers, gardeners, and cooking aficionados refine their skills.


"The arts are essential," said Library Director Abigail Elder. "Beaverton City Library is thrilled to host several programs this spring that encourage patrons of all ages and abilities to embrace their creative side."

Primal Mates: Contemporary Chamber Jazz Duo
Tuesday, April 21, 7 p.m. | Library Auditorium
Chris Lee and Colleen O'Brien are Primal Mates, a contemporary chamber jazz duo in which vibes, voice, cello and percussion come together to form an original repertoire. Classical Up Close

Portland Opera Preview: Show Boat
Tuesday, April 28, 7-8 p.m. | Library Auditorium
A 50-minute preview of the saga of three romances, which blossom aboard a Mississippi River show boat reflecting the true face of America as it was -- and still is today, more than 80 years later.

Song Circle
Monday, April 6, 6:30-8 p.m. (first Monday of every month) | Cathy Stanton Conference Room
Join other singers, musicians, and music lovers of all levels in a supportive and informal environment to share songs and music. Come sing pop and folk songs from the '60s and '70s with a few traditional numbers thrown in. Sing with others and bring 20 photocopies of a favorite song with the lyrics and chords to share. All ages are welcome. This Beaverton City Library "Song Circle" meets the first Monday of each month from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Cathy Stanton Conference Room off of the first floor lobby. Container Gardening: Tomatoes & Herbs
Tuesday, May 5 from 7-8 p.m. | Library Meeting Room B
Enjoy the taste of fresh, vine-ripened tomatoes seasoned with fresh herbs. Don't let lack of yard space keep you from growing fresh tomatoes plus the herbs to season all your cooking. Bob Falconer, OSU Extension Service Master Gardener, will demonstrate just how easy growing these in containers can be. Bharatha Natyam: Dance of India with Jayanthi Raman
Thursday, June 4, 7-8:30 p.m. | Library Auditorium
Bharatha Natyam is one of India's oldest classical dance forms, and is popular both within India and abroad. Come and learn about this dance form with author and award-winning dancer Jayanthi Raman, and see a short presentation of this dance form. Two books by Jayanthi Raman are available for purchase at the event, along with the opportunity to have your book signed by the author.


Story Slam: Travel Edition
Thursday, June 18, 7-8:30 p.m. | Library Auditorium
The Beaverton City Library Story Slam is an open mic, friendly storytelling competition. Share personal travel stories or just come listen to the stories of others. Potential storytellers will put their names in a hat. Names will be picked from the hat and those chosen will take the stage to tell their true, personal, five to eight minute story. Stories must be told from memory. Winner receives a $10 Powell's gift card. Free and open to the public. Potential storytellers should arrive 15 minutes early to speak with the event host about their planned story.
