BEAVERTON, Ore. - The City of Beaverton's Arbor Day event will take place on Saturday, April 11 from 9 a.m. to noon at Sexton Mountain Park and Reservoir. The Friends of Trees are seeking volunteers to help plant native plants and 40 native trees. Native trees and plants will be given away to some volunteers to take home and plant in their yards.

Volunteers who wish to participate should meet at 8:45 a.m. at the staging site, 14700 SW Sexton Mountain Drive at the corner of SW Sexton Mountain and SW Murray Blvd. No registration is required. Coffee and breakfast treats will be provided. Friends of Trees will provide gloves and tools. Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes.

Mayor Denny Doyle will accept two Tree City USA awards on behalf of the city prior to the planting. Beaverton has met the criteria to recertify as a Tree City USA for the 21st year, and has also received the Tree City USA Growth award for exceeding the standard requirements for Tree City USA.

Tree City USA is a national program that provides the framework for community forestry management for cities and towns across America. To achieve Tree City USA status, a city must maintain a tree board or department, have a community tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrate Arbor Day.

Beaverton has also been named the 2015 Oregon Tree City of the Year, selected over 65 other cities in Oregon. This award will be presented at a future Beaverton City Council meeting.
