News Release from Portland Bureau of Emergency Management
Posted on FlashAlert: February 19th, 2015 12:50 PM
The Portland Bureau of Emergency Management (PBEM) is offering three free workshops in February to seek public input on how alerts are issued during an evacuation, and to engage the community in a lively exercise on how to identify hazards and use neighborhood resources in a disaster.
The first event, "Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?," is on Saturday, February 21st at 12 p.m. as part of the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability's Fix-It Fair at David Douglas High School - http://www.portlandoregon.gov/bps/fif. The workshop, provided in English and Spanish, will ask participants how they would respond to different alert messages during a large-scale evacuation to help emergency planners improve Portland's evacuation plan. Participants will have a chance to win a $75 emergency kit.
The second event, "Your Resilient Neighborhood," is on Saturday, February 28th at 10 a.m. as part of the Portland Office of Neighborhood Involvement's Community Summit at the Ambridge Event Center - http://www.portlandoregon.gov/oni/inittogether. Participants are encouraged to register in advance because priority will be given to summit attendees. Unlike traditional preparedness presentations focused on building a kit and making a plan, this workshop will discuss how community gardens, schools, parks, fuel stations, bike shops, food carts and other resources can help a neighborhood withstand a disaster and recover more quickly. Presenters include Carmen Merlo, PBEM Director, and John Warner, Pearl District Neighborhood Emergency Team leader.
Also on February 28th, at 1 p.m at the Community Summit the "Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?" workshop will be offered for a second time. An ASL interpreter will be on hand to provide translation.
