News Release from Oregon City Police Dept.
Posted on FlashAlert: February 26th, 2015 10:10 AM
The Oregon City Police Department along with several Oregon sheriff's offices, local police departments and OSP are participating in the OREGON SAFETY BELT OVERTIME CAMPAIGN BLITZ. The Blitz starts February, 9 2015 and continues through February 22, 2015. The Oregon City Police Department wants to remind you to "BUCKLE UP" before operating your vehicle.
The following information is provided by O.D.O.T. and the US Department of Transportation.
A statewide observation survey in June 2014 found 98% percent of Oregon's motoring public routinely using safety belts. However, ODOT crash data reveals a belt use rate of only 62% among those killed in crashes last year.
Among those killed or injured were 938 child passengers under age eight and a third of these were riding unrestrained or in the wrong type safety restraint for their size.
Oregon law requires children less than forty pounds be restrained in a child seat. Children under one year or weighing less than twenty pounds must be restrained in a rear-facing child seat. A child over forty pounds must be restrained in either a child seat or a booster seat appropriate for their size until they reach age eight or 4' 9" tall AND the adult belt system fits them correctly.
For help with child seats, refer to the seat manufacturer's instructions, vehicle owner's manual, or your local child seat fitting station. A list of fitting stations can be found at: http://www.nhtsa.gov/apps/cps/index.htm or at http://oregonimpact.org/car-seat-resources/
UPDATE:
The Oregon City Police Department Patrol Division had 5 officers participate in the first Safety Belt Overtime Campaign Blitz of 2015. These officers focused on drivers failing to use safety belts, drivers using cellular phones, and speed enforcement. The officers issued a total of 50 citations and or warnings during this enforcement operation. The final stats for this operation included 3 contacts for failing to use a safety belt, 15 contacts for using a cellular phone while driving, and 7 contacts for speeding. Officers also issued citations for careless driving, following too closely, and driving while suspended. The Oregon City Police Department will be participating in the next Safety Belt Blitz scheduled for May of 2015.
