Gresham, Ore. - The Gresham Police Department has been working with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and other local agencies for this year's first safety belt blitz campaign. The enhanced patrols will occurred from February 9, 2014 through February 22, 2014. The enforcement is funded by the USDOT's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. During this blitz, there will be an emphasis on child safety restraints, texting while driving and speeding.

According to ODOT crash data, 938 child passengers under the age of eight were killed or injured in a one year time period. Nearly one third of those children were either riding unrestrained or in the wrong type of safety restraint for their size. You can find more information about fitting stations at the following websites: http://www.nhtsa.gov/apps/cps/index.htm or at http://oregonimpact.org/car-seat-resources/

Distracted driving is a major contributor to traffic collisions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2012 there were 3,328 fatalities and 421,000 injuries as a result of distraction-affected crashes nationwide. Also, it is estimated that at any given moment during the daytime across the US, 660,000 people are using cell phones or electronic devices while driving. This behavior can increase by three times a driver's risk of getting into a crash.

Gresham Police will also be continuing to watch for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the blitz. During the month of January 2015, officers working under the Oregon Impact DUII grant arrested eight drivers for suspicion of DUII, cited ten people for driving with a suspended license, wrote 42 other citations for violations and gave out 19 warnings. Additionally, during the January seat belt blitz Officers cited 16 drivers for seat belt violations, issued 15 speeding citations, cited 5 drivers for driving while suspended and gave out 27 warnings.
