Beaverton-based Vernier Software & Technology, the city's first Enterprise Zone applicant in 2012, recently completed its 16,000 sq. ft. expansion that will lead to nine new jobs.

The Enterprise Zone is a tool within designated areas of the city that encourages eligible businesses to make additional investments to improve employment opportunities, spur economic growth and diversify business activity. Eligible businesses locating or expanding in the Enterprise Zone receive an exemption from property taxes for three and up to five years.

"We're so proud that Vernier used our new Enterprise Zone to expand and grow family wage jobs in our community," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "The city is here to do all it can to help businesses grow and compete in their markets--and Vernier is the perfect example of a successful partnership with the city."

Vernier Software develops science software and instrumentation for K-12 classrooms as well as public colleges and universities with products sold domestically and internationally. For more than 30 years, the company has pioneered award-winning interfaces, sensors, software and curriculum that transform science education.

"Enterprise Zones lead to job creation," said Alma Flores. "Vernier is our first success and we expect many more Beaverton businesses will take advantage of this important tool."

According to Business Oregon, a study conducted in 2010 concluded that at least 7,000 new jobs were generated in 59 of Oregon's enterprise zones over a six year period.

The city's economic development program oversees the Enterprise Zone program and works directly with businesses to apply. For more information, please visit www.BeavertonOregon.gov/Ezone.
