(Hillsboro, Oregon) - Two people were seriously injured when their small car was struck by a westbound Portland & Western train in Hillsboro shortly after noon Thursday. When Hillsboro firefighters arrived on scene, they found a compact car about 100-feet west of the intersection of River Road and TV Highway. The driver was able to get out of the vehicle, but firefighters had to use extrication equipment to free the passenger from the vehicle.
The passenger was taken by Life Flight helicopter to OHSU Trauma Center suffering from life-threatening injuries. The driver was also transported to OHSU but by Metro West Ambulance. He had non-life threatening injuries.
The accident shut down TV Highway for about 40 minutes while firefighters set up a landing zone for Life Flight directly on TV Highway. The highway reopened after fire emergency vehicles cleared the scene and police began their investigation. The Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team, federal rail safety officials and Hillsboro Police will conduct a joint investigation of the accident. One eastbound lane of TV Highway may be obstructed for several hours during the investigation..
